Your trip will begin in the capital city of Sofia. Upon arrival at the airport, you will be taken to your hotel to check-in for your overnight stay. An extensive tour of the city will follow during which you will visit Sofia's main landmarks including the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, Holy Sophia Church, The Russian Church of St. Nicholas the Miracle Maker, St. George's Rotunda, St. Nedelya Church, the Presidential Office Building, Parliament Square, the Ivan Vazov National Theatre, Borisova Gardens and the National Palace of Culture.
Rila Monastery is the largest and most prestigious monastery in Bulgaria and rightfully one of nine sites in Bulgaria under UNESCO protection. The complex includes an adjoining church and kitchen and is a beacon of Bulgarian architecture. The tour continues to Plovdiv, the second-largest city in Bulgaria. Plovdiv is fondly known as a former stronghold of ancient Rome and has several monuments from this period, such as the Roman Theatre, the Roman Stadium and the Aqueduct. St. Marina Church and the Ethnographic Museum are among other sights to see during your one night stay.
Bachkovo Monastery is the second-largest in the country. It is renowned for its collection of old icons, coins and metal plates. The Thracian tombs of Kazanlak were discovered in 1944 and rebuilt 30 years later. During your overnight stay in Kazanlak, you can witness the precision of the tomb walls decorated with paintings of battle scenes. Other points of interest in and around Kazanlak include the Museum of Roses that depicts the history of rose oil production in Bulgaria and the Ethnographic Complex of Kulata.
A busy day in prospect as first you visit the Etara open-air museum of arts and crafts before sampling the Sokolski Monastery. Finally, you will enjoy a guided tour during your overnight stay in the medieval town of Veliko Tarnovo. The town and in particular the fortress of Tsarevets are symbolic of the reign of the Second Bulgarian Empire. It is steeped in regality as the former home of several Bulgarian Emperors with its palaces, marketplace and patriarchal cathedral among the points of interest.
Your quick tour of northern Bulgaria continues in the village of Arbanassi and later the Transfiguration Monastery. The Holy Nativity Church with over 3,500 images from the New Testament is popular. But a visit to Konstantsalieva House completes a worthwhile trip. Later in the day, you will take in the Transfiguration Monastery before returning to Sofia.
Your trip concludes with breakfast in the hotel and a journey to the airport for your departing flight.
