Bulgaria has the honor of hosting a unique cultural treasure — the bagpipe and the tradition of bagpipe playing are now included in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The decision was made at the 20th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage in Delhi, India.
The Bulgarian bagpipe is an instrument with a long history, dating back hundreds of years. It is traditionally used to accompany weddings, celebrations, rituals, and horo dances. Making a bagpipe requires skill and precision: a leather bag is carefully shaped and treated, then fitted with a melodic pipe and sometimes an additional drone pipe. The pipes are crafted to produce the characteristic sound, and may also be decorated with carving and ornamental details.
The knowledge of making and playing the bagpipe is passed down from generation to generation — from fathers to sons, from masters to students, and today also through music schools and folk art centers. UNESCO’s recognition affirms Bulgarian folk music as part of the world’s cultural heritage and inspires new generations to learn, experience, and carry on this tradition. It is a chance for more people to discover the richness of Bulgarian culture and the unique musical tradition of bagpipe playing.
